Gāyatrī

The Gāyatrī mantra is an invocation of the Sun God (Savitṛ), from the Ṛgveda (3.62.10).

(1)

तत्स॑वि॒तुर्वरे॑ण्यं॒ भर्गो॑ दे॒वस्य॑धीमहि ।

tatsaviturvareṇyaṃ bhargo devasyadhīmahi

tat savituḥ vareṇyaṃ bhargaḥ devasya dhīmahi

that.ACC:SG sun.GEN:SG excellent.ACC:SG radiance.ACC:SG god.GEN:SG meditate.OPT:1PL

that {of the Sun} excellent radiance {of the god} {let’s meditate}

‘Let’s meditate on that excellent radiance of the Sun god,’

dhiyo yo naḥ pracodayāt

dhiyaḥ yaḥ naḥ pracodayāt
